Coffee Common x NYC

24 01 2012

Coffee Common brings together world-class baristas and roasters with shared values, to create unique experiences that introduce people to the nuanced joys of exceptional coffee. We believe that great coffee is, at its best, a collaboration of an empowered coffee farmer, an artisan coffee roaster, a dedicated barista, and an enlightened consumer.” –coffeecommon.com

From January 19th through 22nd, Coffee Common held their first public event in North America at A Startup Store in Chelsea. A selection of the world’s best baristas gathered to make delicious coffee and help people understand how they can too. Demand for quality coffee is on the rise, but a market filled with strange devices and alien vernacular can sometimes be intimidating. Luckily Coffee Common assembled a crew of local and international baristas who ensured that each attendee walked away equipped with the fundamentals of delicious coffee. In addition to engaging demo stations, baristas were on hand to answer any questions, whilst serving some of the best coffees currently available from around the country.

We credit and thank Coffee Common for the first two photos, and Scott Beale/Laughing Squid (laughingsquid.com)for the last three photos.

Each bar, or demo station, featured a different focus on ingredients, method, and taste. The guests enjoyed learning the differences between coffee varieties and brew methods, while discussing all the details of brewing a great cup of coffee.

@ the Ingredient& Bar folks tasted exactly how cream and sugar made bad coffee taste better by masking it, and delicious coffee taste worse by diluting it.

@ the Method& Bar step-by-step displays were shown on how to brew your own coffee. One could choose from one of four brew methods: Chemex, Aeropress, Hario V60 Pour Over or Hario Wood Neck Brewer, and from one of five delicious coffees (Counter Culture Coffee, Intelligentsia, Heart Coffee Roasters, Ritual Coffee, Gimme! Coffee).

@ the Taste& Bar each coffee was prepared the same way so people could immediately see the differences in flavors.

“Of course, making coffee for a lot of people required a lot of hot water, with the help of La Marzocco USA we had things covered. They provided us with Marco Ecoboiler water towers and the Uber-esque under counter boiler to keep our kettles full and the baristas brewing non-stop.” – coffeecommon.com

La Marzocco USA- Pre Camp Pull A Shot LA Coffee Crawl

1 11 2011

Barista Guild of America Coffee Crawlin Crew: Jason & April Dominy (Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters), Sarah Dooley (La Marzocco)  and the men who organized the  extravaganza  Mr. Noah Namowicz & Joe Morrocco (Cafe Imports).  We set out to visit as many shops as we could, but don’t worry we’re totally coming back and we want to visit so many more of you!  Send us an email as we plan our future caffeignation: sarah [at] lamarzoccousa [dot] com.

Hopping off the jet and into the waiting car of Tonx (Tonx Coffee). Tony sweeps a few of us off to what he labels his favorite brunch spot in LA, AXE (ah-shay).  (Very important to support sanity when tasting coffee).  Shortly after our departure Noah & Joe of Cafe Imports land, grab a souped up rental mini-van and head toward the first coffee meetup, Intelligentsia Venice. Here we were also met by  John & Andrea Stoval, (Coffee Tools Application).

Typical to Intelligentsia Coffee, Venice a line of out the door, a smiling barista to greet and host you to your coffee bar where excellent beverages are crafted and served. Coffee faces…everywhere, driving short and not so short conversations. A few check-ins and the coffee crawl destinations are finalized.

Collectively off to Paper or Plastik. Additionally adding the super friendly Todd Goldsworthy & adorable son Levi to the caravan. Yummy coffee and a dark rimmed women with warm motherly charm introduces herself as the owner Anya Michelson. She politely took our plates, asked about the service and would later share the extended floor plan addition of a dance studio, at which point there was twinkling pride in her eyes.

Next stop, the LA hotspot that is Handsome Coffee Roasters. Arriving to a pop up cafe,

delicious coffees and a public view of the future roaster/cafe. Chris Owens, Mike Phillips & Tyler Wells were fine hosts to our growing coffee crawl.

There was also a visionaries tour of the future by Mr. Phillips. We tromped around the freshly dug drainage lines and stood on literal earth for the future roaster/cafe.  Outside, film crews drive by and street posts indicate there will be filming proving we are clearly in LA…Hollywood signage looming in the hills and in our thoughts.

Back into cars we race through streets,  framed in palm trees and yet another slow drive past camera’s filming the caravan of tricked out low riders…ending up at Proof Bakery & Cognescenti Coffee Bar.

Here we sample the Tonx Coffee Costa Rican offering as espresso. They were kind enough to stay open for also showcasing amazing baked items and a ridiculous chocolate truffle. Other options for coffee; Four Barrell, Heart, Coava , & Ecco. (A little Pacific Northwest in the mix).

At this point hydration and food is the next necessary need for proper brain function, continued communication with humanity and balance.  Walking distance from dinner and our last stop of the day, Intelligentsia Silverlake.

A stunning space with yup you guessed it, predictably delicious coffee and more coffee folk to chat with.

The sun is setting and the caravan parts from  it’s tour guide, heading toward the 101. Next destination, Santa Barbara’s El Capitan Resort for the 2nd Annual Camp Pull A Shot!

Smell, Slurp, Spit

30 06 2011

Today at La Marzocco we did something that we’re going to start doing more often: CUPPINGS.

Joining us today were friends from Victrola, Kopplin’s and Milstead & Co.  In addition to cupping a variety of roasters’ spring release coffees, Andrew Milstead brought by samples of the four major acids found in brewed coffee – Acetic, Citric, Malic and Phosphoric acid – which we of course cupped.

Cupping is going to start becoming a regular thing around LM, so if you have coffee you think we should try, please send it our way! Or better yet, come over yourself and we can cup it together.

DC Coffee

28 09 2010

What better to do in DC than do a coffee crawl with people who know the scene best? Alex and Brian of Counter Culture and John of Coffee Catcher. Began with coffee cupping and espresso tastings of Apollo and Toscano.

Chinatown Coffee Company (feat. coffees from Counter Culture and Intelligentsia)

Peregrine Espresso (feat. Counter Culture): Julie (right) is the BGA's Mid-Atlantic chapter rep and pulls a mean shot.

Dolcezza (feat. Wrecking Ball, Ritual, Intelligentsia, and Counter Culture): A gelateria featuring coffee or a cafe featuring gelato? Don't matter. They put extensive emphasis on both. My first encounter of Wrecking Ball's DMT espresso.

Nice to see a custom pourover bar fabricated by Kyle at Ritual in DC.

Filter Coffeehouse (feat. Caffe Pronto): Around the corner from Dolcezza in Dupont Circle is Filter. They have a really inconspicuous espresso machine.

Filter's tshirt! OMG OMG

Intelligentsia Videos

28 04 2010

Department of the 4th Dimension (from someone in the 4th dimension I suppose) has decided to enter our dimension in search of the “ultimate tastemakers” (in their words). Wouldn’t that mean the 4th dimension is pretty tasteless then?

Their journey begins with three videos on Intelligentsia in Venice, CA. Uber barista Kyle Glanville stars in this black & white mini-series opposite of their Espresso Parts restored and souped up vintage La Marzocco GS/2. The docudrama cinematography combined with onscreen charisma oozing from Kyle will sure to make all the lady baristas from around the country gush.
